WELCOME TO THE PIANO
Welcome to the world of piano! If you’re reading this, it means you’re ready to learn something new—and that’s awesome.
Learning the piano is like going on an adventure. You’ll discover new sounds, play real songs, and have fun along the way. You don’t need to know anything right now. Everyone starts at the beginning, even the best musicians.
Sometimes you might hit the wrong note or feel a little stuck—and that’s okay! That’s how learning works. What matters most is that you keep trying and enjoy the music you're making.
This guide will help you with the basics: how to sit, where to put your fingers, how to find notes, and even how to play your very first song.
You’ve got this. Let’s make some music!
What Is a Piano?
The piano is a keyboard instrument with 88 keys—some black, some white. When you press a key, a small hammer inside hits a string, which creates sound.
Hand Position and Posture
Sit at the center of the piano
Keep your back straight and shoulders relaxed
Let your hands hang naturally and curve your fingers (like you're holding a small ball)
Start with your thumbs on Middle C
The Musical Alphabet
Music only uses seven letters: A, B, C, D, E, F, G Then it repeats.
Middle C is usually near the middle of the keyboard, just to the left of a group of two black keys.

Understanding the Keys
The black keys come in groups of two and three. Use them to find the white notes:
C is to the left of the two black keys
F is to the left of the three black keys
Finger Numbers
Each finger is given a number to make learning easier:
1 = Thumb 2 = Index 3 = Middle 4 = Ring 5 = Pinky

First Song: Hot Cross Buns
This song only uses three notes: E, D, and C. Start with your right hand, using fingers 3 (E), 2 (D), and 1 (C).
E – D – C
E – D – C
C – C – C – C
D – D – D – D
E – D – C
Practice Tips
Practice a little bit every day
Go slow—don't rush
Say the note names while you play
Keep your hands relaxed
Most of all, enjoy it!
